Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Arts
About
The Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Arts is an art gallery run by and located within James Madison University. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to intern there for three semesters, almost two years. The time I began this internship was when I first took interest in bringing my talents to the digital creative field. The gallery was lacking a graphic designer, so I went on to assume that role. Throughout my time there, I was tasked to design several graphics. I was able to work and collaborate with people such as the gallery director, featured artists, or even fellow interns on nearly every one of my projects. Being able to bounce off of their ideas and to design for the needs of another person or group of people was something I highly valued.
Reflection
In my time interning at the Duke Hall Gallery, I was able to learn a vast variety of skills. On top of graphic design, I experienced behind-the-scenes work behind putting together art exhibitions, direct client interaction from talking to featured artists, marketing techniques, etc. Due to the "informal design system" the gallery followed, I felt slightly limited creatively in some areas. Despite that, I was still able to independently make significant design decisions. Overall, I am very grateful for my time in this gallery, and I believe I was able to take away several valuable skills that I can implement into future positions.
